About

Dr. Melissa Mascaro joined Cayman Clinic in 2016 and practices Family Medicine and Primary Care Sports Medicine, caring for patients across the lifespan—from children and young athletes to active adults, weekend warriors, and older adults who want to stay healthy, mobile, and active.

Fellowship-trained in Primary Care Sports Medicine at the University of Connecticut, Dr. Mascaro specializes in the evaluation and non-operative treatment of sports and musculoskeletal injuries, with an emphasis on personalized care and helping each patient safely return to the activities they enjoy.

Her extensive sports medicine experience includes serving as a team physician for the UConn Huskies national championship men’s and women’s basketball teams and providing medical coverage for the New York City and Boston Marathons, Lake Placid Ironman, Mixed Martial Arts, hockey, USA Gymnastics, USA Boxing, swimming, tennis, and rugby. She has also provided sideline coverage for Gotham FC in New York and gained specialized experience in concussion care and return-to-play management through the Matthew J. Morahan III Health Assessment Center for Athletes at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in New Jersey.

Dr. Mascaro has served as a consultant physician for USA Gymnastics and is currently Medical Advisor for the Cayman Islands Aquatic Association (CIASA). She regularly provides medical coverage for sporting events throughout the Cayman Islands and works with athletes of all levels on injury prevention, rehabilitation, and safe return to sport.

At Cayman Clinic, she offers comprehensive primary care and sports medicine, diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound, ultrasound-guided procedures, concussion management, and non-operative treatment of injuries.

Dr. Mascaro has also contributed to the medical community in the Cayman Islands, serving as a representative on the Cayman Islands Medical & Dental Society and as its Continuing Medical Education (CME) Coordinator. She has also served on the Cayman Islands Medical & Dental Council.

Dr. Mascaro received her 3 years of residency training in Family Medicine at Hackensack Mountainside Family Medicine residency where she served as academic chief resident. Prior to graduating from St Matthew's University School of Medicine, BWI, she received a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Physiology from West Virginia University. Dr Mascaro is a former full-scholarship Division 1 gymnast from West Virginia University where she was co captain of her NCAA team

Published Research

She enjoys teaching and is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Seton Hall University and St. Georges School of Medicine. She has published book chapters, and articles in peer-reviewed journals, as well as presented research and given instructional lectures at sports medicine meetings both nationally and internationally. Dr. Mascaro's research interests include the female athlete as well as injury prevention in the adolescent athlete. She spent time at the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta working on policy and legislature for Exercise is Medicine as a student.
